Cottage Family Lore -- A Granddaughter Remembers
My Grandpa Fay took his family on camping vacations nearly every summer when my mother was growing up. For many years, their preferred destination was a campsite near Niagara Falls. One faithful summer, however, there was no room at this beloved spot. The helpful proprietors suggested a park near Toronto with campsites, which also turned out to be full. After receiving a tip there that another park just a little further north had great camping--and being up for an adventure--the family continued on to discover the Georgian Bay Island National Park.
They were hooked after one summer! Each year they returned to the park to camp. My grandfather was fond of the American west and made a large teepee one year that the family then took camping each summer. It turned out to be quite an attraction for the park and the Fays garnered the prime campsite on the point from then on. The teepee brought visitors to the park who saw it while boating on the nearby channel.
As fate would have it, one of those visitors was a couple building a humble A-frame cottage on the bay. My grandfather and grandmother became fast friends with them and even started saving to purchase a lot so they could all spend summers together. After years of saving my grandparents found out the family that had built the A-frame on the bay was relocating and would not be near enough to continue using it. They needed to sell and Grandpa Fay was ready to buy!
In 1978, the purchase was completed and Grandpa Fay's cottage was officially founded. My grandparents spent many summers up there and my grandfather continued to summer there for over 20 years after my grandmother passed away. I can remember visiting most summers since I was a child and adored being up there with Grandpa Fay. We'd spend our time there reading (one of Grandpa Fay's passions), sailing, swimming, hiking in the woods on the property and at the national park across the way... he loved paddling around in his inner tube each day and sharing with us all the intricacies of cottage life.
Now I'm able to share the cottage and it's wonderful surroundings with my family... another generation who will learn a sense of adventure in the great north and come to appreciate it's quality of peace. I hope that you and your family and friends will come experience Grandpa Fay's Cottage and fall in love with it as I have.
